The Bridge at Courbevoie – Georges Seurat – Oil on Canvas – 46.4 x 53.3 cm

Inspiration for Riley’s pointillism painting from the late 50’s before her entry into OP art.

6a00e54f0014bd88340133f1e69cba970bIn the mid 60s, the London look started to become huge with bands like The Who gaining prominence. Op art seemed to be the style that the West gravitated towards. Simultaneously Riley had a show in the US for the first time. Suddenly Op Art patterns started appearing on everything from clothes to advertisements, stationery, and furnishing fabrics.

Riley denounced the way her art was being “vulgarized in the rag trade” and publicly expressed her ‘deep anger’ at the commercialization of one of her paintings by a New York dress firm.  She eventually sued for copyright infringement but was unsuccessful. Riley was quoted saying after this, it would take 20 years for people to take her work seriously again. http://www.nytimes.com/2000/08/27/magazine/modern-op.html
