No one can say the McKenzie Regional Leadership Team lacks for ambition – small but mighty, it has put together one of the most comprehensive, wide-ranging prevention plans of any of the regions.
The team was excited to bring Roots Empathy to local elementary schools starting in 2018, and will continue the program once it’s safe to resume in-person learning. Under the Strong Communities umbrella, the team plans to use existing Family Resource Centers as hubs to launch strategies like Triple P Positive Parenting Program, and Parent Cafés, peer support groups for parents. McKenzie’s plan also relies on collaboration: Local restaurants will host the cafés, and the Welcome Our Neighbors program will be implemented in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce.

Roots of Empathy
This classroom-based program cultivates empathy in children in order to build more caring, peaceful, and civil societies. Through interactions with an infant and caregiver, and with the guidance of a Roots of Empathy Instructor, children learn to identify and understand the feelings of the baby, then their own feelings and those of others. 90by30 has partnered with Roots of Empathy to bring this program to 50 first- and second-grade classrooms in Lane County.
What’s Next
The McKenzie community, hit hard by wildfires this summer, is working hard to recover. When schools are able to reopen for in-person learning, the region will resume its Roots of Empathy program. The team will also build on a pre-pandemic Parent Café trial to bring together parents in the area.
