About The Summer Minor in the Digital Humanities
The Digital Humanities is an emergent academic practice that applies powerful digital analytic and computational tools to the study of the humanities and humanistic social sciences. These tools allow scholars to create, organize and analyze large databases; to plot geo-spatial maps and visual representations of their research; and to curate, connect, and make accessible archives of rare primary materials, with accompanying critical analyses. In the Digital Humanities Summer Minor program, students learn to apply these tools to humanistic study, and to conduct the kind of studies that these new methods make possible. The program imparts both humanistic and technical knowledge, and provides wide-ranging interdisciplinary training to students across all fields of study. Students in the humanities crave the timely skills and capacities provided by digital training, while those in computer-based disciplines have embraced applying their technical knowledge to a new and meaningful set of questions. The summer minor in Digital Humanities draws from this large population of students, both within and beyond the University.
The summer Digital Humanities program offers a minor to UC Berkeley students and a certificate to non-UCB students. It is comprised of a suite of five courses (3 units each) taken over two six-week sessions, totaling 15 credit hours per student. The first session is devoted to two required core courses: one in Theory and Methods, and the other in Practicing the Digital Humanities. The second session offers several topical courses using digital humanities methods across the humanities disciplines, from which the students will choose three electives. The categories for these elective courses are: Digital Humanities and Archival Design, Digital Humanities and Visual and Spatial Analysis, Digital Humanities and Text and Language Analysis, and Critical Digital Humanities. The minor may be completed over two summers.
The plan for a summer minor program was initiated in the office of the Dean of Arts and Humanities, and was designed in collaboration with the Digital Humanities at Berkeley.
