Big Data in Education and Information Studies Symposium

interactions_alpha_landscapeInterActions: UCLA Journal of Education and Information Studies University of California Los Angeles presents the Big Data in Education and Information Studies Symposium on March 3, 2017 to facilitate dialogue and partnerships across disciplinary boundaries, enable collaborative work and highlight new directions and research agendas. This symposium focuses on how these discourses, technologies and methodologies are enacted in both Education and Information Studies.

The ubiquity of “big data” challenges us to rethink and redefine the models we have for understanding surveillance across disciplines. Capacities for storage, processing and distribution have increased aggressively and have fostered an increased reliance on algorithmic surveillance, analytics and “the cloud.” As work in STS has shown, any assumption that these phenomena are automated, unmediated and unbiased has been debunked, and yet the rhetorical power of big data
remains.

Submission Guidelines: InterActions Symposium accepts submissions for individual papers, pre-constituted panels, posters, and alternative events from graduate students, undergraduates, professionals, faculty and activists.

Individual papers, posters, or events –

  • submit abstract (250 words) and a brief bibliography.
  • successful applicants will be invited to submit to the InterActions special issue published in Winter 2017.
  • submit 250-word description of the broader panel topic, in addition to required materials for individual paper submissions
    for each presenter’s specific topic within the panel.
  • submit as Word .doc to interactions@gseis.ucla.edu

We encourage symposium participants to submit their research and invite articles, literature reviews, book reviews, exhibition reviews, featured commentaries, and position pieces for publication in our special issue on Big Data in Education and Information Sciences in Winter 2017.
