The Role

  1. You will serve as Data & Society’s primary press liaison, helping inform and connect journalists with expertise within the Institute and its wider network. You will also help to prepare Data & Society’s researchers to respond to and work productively with journalists and journalistic publications.
  2. In addition, you will be called upon to contribute your editorial expertise to the full range of Data & Society’s communications. You will help edit researchers’ work to make it broadly accessible, and you will help the communications team translate research for different audiences.

Responsibilities:

  • Media strategy development and implementation;
  • Cultivation and expansion of an active network of journalists, editors, publishers, and pundits;
  • Helping to organize and host workshops for journalists on data and society issues;
  • Coaching and provisioning of training for researchers on media-related topics as needed (in media relations, writing for the public, etc.);
  • Editorial and writing support to expert researchers and the D&S Communications team;
  • Working closely with research teams to track findings and develop media strategy around relevant work.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of news media experience, ideally both editorial and journalistic;
  • Able to work independently, spotting opportunities and moving quickly to take advantage of them;
  • A supportive personality, with the desire to enable others to shine;
  • Excellent editor and writer;
  • Experience coordinating media campaigns and communications for different audiences.
