Assistant Professor Position in the Department of Photography & Film, Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts

The VCUarts Department of Photography and Film is seeking a dynamic engaged artist and teacher, fluent in photography, video art, installation-based practice and/or multi-media/hybrid uses of digital media in the fine arts, for the position of Assistant Professor of Photo Film.

Responsibilities: This position is a 9-month tenure track faculty position in the area of Photography an an academic rank of Assistant Professor.

Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department of Photograpy & Film in support of the BFA and MFA curriculum requirements, ranging from the Sophomore to Graduate These courses may focus on photography, video art, installation-based practice and/or multi-media/hybrid uses of digital media in the fine arts, depending on the faculty member’s research strengths and technical expertise. The faculty member will mentor students and collaborate with other department faculty on methods to utilize and grow our production facilities and other assets in support of teaching enhancement of the department curriculum, both at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Required Qualifications:

  • MFA or equivalent professional experience and training that equates to an MFA
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
  • Active artistic practice and reputation in the field
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in studio critique and teaching beyond graduate school
  • Knowledge and fluency in photography, video art, installation-based practice and/or multi-media/hybr digital media in the fine arts.

Preferred: 

  • Strong foundation in contemporary critical discourse
  • Fluency in interdisciplinary and experimental approaches to contemporary art Demonstrated ability to attract high-caliber graduate students
  • Record of community-engaged teaching or extra-curricular activities
