3 Maps of mock cholera breakout on campus

These three maps are used to analyze cholera data that is being transmitted through three mediums: Facebook posts, Twitter posts, and the locations of flags placed where corpses were found on campus. Our group decided that the source of the cholera outbreak is in Friendly Hall. The Facebook posts about the students who were found dead had an emphasis on romance language students and the first student who was found dead was studying a Scandinavian language. Both the Scandinavian and the romance language departments are located in Friendly. The Twitter posts also had information in them that pointed to the romance language department, including a student who tweeted in French. When a density calculation was done on the map that has locations of white flags, there was a high density of flags at Friendly, but the highest density was located along 13th Ave. This would still make sense for Friendly to be considered a source since infected individuals could have fallen dead walking in between buildings. Lastly, another clue from the final Facebook post led us to decide on Friendly Hall as the source. It was posted on 2/20 that authorities have “now located and shut down the source of the outbreak”. This wording could lead one to assume that the previous shutdowns of Condon, Pacific, and McKenzie halls were fruitless and that they have finally located the source which, in our opinion, is Friendly Hall.

This map has information in numerical order reflecting posts on Facebook about corpses found on campus and people infected with cholera. The points were chosen by taking clues out of the information given about what infected students were studying and making a reasonable guess where those students may have been during a normal day. In this particular map, the highest concentration of people infected with cholera had affiliation (either were majoring or minoring in a language) with the romance language department, which is located in Friendly Hall.

View larger mapThis map is organized in the order of the outbreaks. The first outbreak is depicted with green stickpins, and the second with green pushpins. The third is symbolized with green crosses, and the fourth is symbolized with orange stickpins. The fifth outbreak is symbolized with red pushpins, and the sixth is with pink stickpins. From the pattern of data and organization of the data, one can tell that the highest cholera population is located near Friendly Hall. The clues in the tweets indicate that there were a lot of people diagnosed with cholera that had foreign language classes. Foreign language is also taught in Friendly Hall, and therefore, I believe that the source for cholera is in Friendly Hall.

This map shows the flags in campus that people infected with cholera outbreak. As we can see, we found a lot of flags in campus at university of Oregon. But, the highest corpses located in Friendly hall. I think the cholera spread from Friendly hall because there are many flags near it. In addition, the map shows the details of density with ratio of points/sq. miles. There are many areas in campus which students collected points. The light color in the map shows the less points and the darker color shows the high points.
