The three points that I’d like to emphasize in chapter 8 are, to me, very useful and practical for video/photo journalism. Walt Harrington mentions “intimate journalism” in the “Beginning in Narrative” section
“records the acts of ordinary people and their everyday lives, something all too rare in our profession. These stories record fears, accomplishments, and aspirations of people as they seek meaning and purpose in their own lives. They help people understand their places in the world.”
The intimate journalism, is what we do and hope to be better at when doing all kinds of documentary works. It is for sure that nobody would ever want a stranger invading in their lives with a camera, then show it to the public. So it’s necessary to have a good proposal when approaching the subject. Harrington says the question that derives intimate journalism is simple– “how do people live, and what do they value?” by explaining this to the subject, we only get the first step done, then they need to feel comfortable be around cameras, and gradually show their real lives. I tend to start approaching my characters without carrying a camera with me if I could, and have a private one-to-one conversation with them as soon as possible, letting them know what you want and why, what do you like to show and what they don’t want to show.
The second point I want to talk about is Lane Degregory’s Narrative as a Daily Habit. She gives out 13 tips that help to find a good story in daily life, and how to tell the stories, like “talk to a stranger”, “work holidays”, “grab the stories nobody else wants” etc. It might seem tedious to do all of those, but sometimes, the most boring story is where you can be the most creative with.
And then when it comes to photography, the narrative becomes a bit different. Molly Bingham says that good photo story takes as much time as good writing story, and “photographers must encourage subject to open up and allow events to unfold in front of them.” because writers and recall and repaint the event that has happened, photographers can’t, if they do, it’d be considered unethical. Most people feel more comfortable talking to a journalist than being photographed in the same situation, they tend to be more behaved, more humble, and basically not being their true selves. Bingham also mentions that not all photos need captions, some do, but the ideal way to me is that if I could make everything “show don’t tell”, and create a strong visual story that’s also compelling.
