Fit for Jihad

I was captivated by a nine-minute-long New York Times video on a bodybuilder who made videos with his friends in Egypt. Now he is an ISIS fighter in Syria, and his friends are struggling to understand exactly what happened.

Arabic subtitles are used throughout the piece, signaling that the Times clearly wants the video to be viewed in the Middle East, even if Arabic speakers are not the “normal” audience for a Western news outlet.

As it was obviously impossible to conduct a live interview with the ISIS fighter, Islam Yaken, filmmakers Mona El-Naggar and Ben Lafflin turned to YouTube footage of Yaken’s old bodybuilding videos and newer ISIS propaganda, blending them with present-day interviews with Yaken’s friends. These interviews are prefaced with video portraits at 1:00.

At :37, a quick cut from ISIS video to bodybuilding video on the spoken word “gym” transports us back in time to Yaken’s less religious days in Egypt. Establishing shots serve as B-roll after the title rolls at 1:25, bring the viewer gently into Cairo. We enter the gym with a detail shot on weights at 1:35, then meet Yaken’s first friend pumping iron. Well-shot B-roll of the friend skateboarding while wearing a Linkin Park T-shirt quickly and wordlessly shows a telling facet of the friend’s life — he is clearly no extremist.

Archival footage of Yaken, also dressed in Western attire while talking about the temptation of women. The filmmakers skillfully cut to a black screen — black being the color, of lack of color, signifying ISIS — as Yaken asks “What am I supposed to do?”

These subtitles often hover over cuts, lingering into the next scene, as when Yaken’s friend says to the camera at 5:05 “You always want both, this life and the afterlife,” which could be an alternate title of this entire video.

Post-production continues to factor as creepy music rises from the sound bed at 5:52, underscoring Yaken’s deepening extremism. A slow fade-in at 7:04 and birds flying past a crescent at 7:10 create a long shot of B-roll, culminating at 7:20 to a bright white backdrop.

Near the end of the video, a disorientingly hard cut comes at 8:01 from Yaken’s message of hate to a closeup of SpongeBob SquarePants in a Santa Claus hat. This echoes the spoken notion of “friends he left behind,” and indeed represents an entire world he has denounced.
