Friend, do you like cute ingenuity? Please feast your eyes on “Caine’s Arcade,” by filmmaker Nirvan Mullick.

Throughout the film, creative but unfussy camerawork echoes Caine’s creative but unfussy arcade.

A rack focus with very shallow depth-of-field takes us into the story at the start. Throughout the piece, Steadicam b-roll is blended with tripod-based interview A-roll. The camera dollies out at 1:10, then around the swinging subject in the next shot. At 2:15 the camera pans from Caine’s father to the little boy, metaphorically taking us from the dark world of work to the bright world of play. More rack focusing during a slider-shot close-up on the army goalies at 2:30. An adorable dolly-in on our young protagonist at 4:20. A fade-out and fade-in at 4:49 shows the passage of time. Judicious use of time-lapse at 7:10 shows all the work being done of Caine’s behalf. The longest shot of the whole piece is at 7:50, to show Caine’s realization and reaction to the flash mob. And a funny, somehow-poignant song about the arcade begins at 9:00 to help wrap up this special piece.

    I had a smile on my face the whole time I was watching this. I really love the moment right before 2:38 where Cain describes the upgrades he made to a soccer game (by adding army men goalies) and the audio of “well is it too easy now?” pairs perfectly with the slo-mo shot of Cain flicking the paper ball through the goal.

    And wow, I never expected the story to turn the way it did, to a kind of “present-tense” story where we are wondering “what will Caine’s reaction be?” That was special… and actually perhaps made more special because I totally didn’t see it coming. I just thought it was a little vignette on an amazing DIY arcade with no customers but a dedicated creator. So it was all the more exciting to find out there was a surprise in store for Caine at the end!
