Breathe: the interplay between sight and sound

Breathe, is a great example of a story without words. I’m totally impressed by its use of the natural, rhythmic sounds of the gym and how the clock shows the race against time. Director, Paul Schneider introduces the audio in beautifully woven layers. In addition to the music, we sometimes hear one nat sound, other times more than one. From the start of the piece until :20 we hear only one piece of audio. At :21 we also begin to hear the action we’re about to see at :29, then back to one at :35. We’re being pre-introduced to the next activity keeping up with the relentless pace of a workout.

The beautifully back lit clock, with light chalk dust in the air begins its countdown at :17, telling the audience how long this frantic pace will go. There’s a slow push in to the clock each time we see it which adds to the drama. More than 70% of the video are close-up shots making everything much more personal. People enter and exit the frame or enter and exit focus, adding to the sense of speed and pace they’re moving. The video works well and is something I’ll use as a reminder of how natural sound is as important as the visual language we use to tell a story.
