It’s about time

In this video we start with a closeup of a metronome, then we go wider to reveal a clock and then match cut to a different clock at :18. Our first look at the narrator comes at :30 when we rack focus going from sharp focus on the clock to out of focus and we see Dr. Demetrios Matsakis reflected on the clock face.

At :43 I thought it was an interesting stylistic choice to have Dr. Matsakis take up just the lower right corner of the frame. I would expect a wide shot of Dr. Matsakis but from this shot I think the director wants time to be the central focus of our story, not the narrator. We can be creative in how we frame the subject.

The jump cuts at 1:00 work here because it shows the passing of time outside of the clock room. After a series of closeup shots of the clocks, we cut to an extra long shot of Dr. Matsakis in front of the Naval Observatory clocks.

I like the series of details when we hear Fred Covington, the voice of time. At 3:06 we see him turning up the volume, then we see the USNO Master Clock and it’s servers, and then to it’s various components as we here the what time it is. Then to close out this section we end with Dr. Matsakis turning the volume back down.

The video is over six minutes long and I like that the filmmaker broke it down in to sections, putting each title over the blank space beneath the clock in the library. It keeps me as a viewer more engaged then had they decided to fade to black and have the doctor sitting somewhere else to introduce the next section. There is another section transition at 4:05 when Dr. Matsakis discusses failure.

The shot at 4:20 shows Dr. Matsakis only at the very bottom center of the frame, giving more prominence to a picture of Stonehenge, another type of clock.

I like the shot at 5:34 where we see Dr. Matsakis spin the globe, it stops, and then starts spinning in reverse just after the doctor says that in regards to time that “in another sense, we don’t know anything at all.”

I think the video should have ended 20 seconds earlier at 5:54. We see Dr. Matsakis walking away from us down the hallway and we pan up to two clocks. Instead we get a shot where it looks like the cameraman took the camera off his shoulder but hadn’t stopped recording yet and then we fade to black.
