Connecting Multiple Stories

This video from TechTown Portland shows the story of how six people in the tech scene came to Portland, and what they like about the city. We open with time-lapse of the mountains and then the skyline, and back to the mountain view with connected dots in the clouds underneath the title. We pan down from the clouds and push in to a coffee shop. At :24 we have a matched action cut showing our first narrator, Jonan Scheffler, at the counter, then there’s a character dolly shot of him on his laptop at the coffee shop.

In our second vignette we start with a medium tracking shot of Shabnam Jahromi. At :46 as she’s saying that “a world of opportunity opened up for me,” we see her looking out over the city from her balcony. I like the use of time-lapse here showing that Shabnam starts her day at sunrise.

At :55 we have an overhead extra long shot of Brian Stein biking across the Esplanade. At 1:11 there’s an interesting effect where Brian is in slow motion on his bike, while the action behind him is sped up.

Then at 1:26 Michael Gray is walking at regular speed while everyone around him is sped up while he’s waiting to get on the MAX. I like the smooth transition when we see the MAX go by Michael in one scene, and then in the next scene the MAX goes by revealing Carla Nichols, our next narrator.

We have more time-lapse from 1:48 to indicate how busy and vibrant Portland is. People are always on the go. We pan right as Carla and a man are walking through a server room. The black servers create the fade to black transition to Tom Kobayashi walking on a bridge. At 2:15 we have the first of two push in’s on collaborating workers followed be a 180 spin around a horseshoe table of workers at 2:23.

We then start revisiting characters from earlier in the video which adds a welcome sense of continuity. We zoom in on Shabnam Jahromi as she enters her office building and pan around as she meets with coworkers. There’s a medium shot of Brian Stein getting lunch at a food cart with a coworker. Jonan Scheffler, is shown in an extra long shot of him and his family at a park.

At 3:16 we have a short line of coworkers raising a beer to each other and the camera zooms in, through the clear circular trophy taking us outside.

The filmmaker speeds up Carla Nichols’s background at 3:24, keeping her at regular speed. She tells us that her team came up with 60 things she should do to explore the area which leads to quick shots of craft beers, hiking, lighthouses, and mountains to illustrate what her team has told her about the area.

At 4:03 the list of companies becomes a burst of sunlight. The camera then pulls back to reveal Jonan sitting with his dog, and the sun in the background. We have motivated movement of Jonan and his dog walking through the park before panning up over the trees at 4:11. The video ends with an aerial shot of the city.
