Trendy Tricks with Heart

“Making Space” by Petra Collins is actually a three part series. The first segment is a little over three minutes long. In just a few minutes I felt like I got an honest glimpse into the psyche’s of several of the dance team’s members. This is a documentary piece, but it feels edgy and more art-y than other documentaries I’ve seen. I’ll examine a few techniques used by Ms. Collins that I believe make the work unique.

#1 The Use of Character Portraits

“Making Space” uses character portraits instead of traditional interviews to introduce the main characters. At :29 we meet Clara White who is standing straight and expressionless in her dance uniform in a wide shot. This cuts to a slow motion tracking shot of Clara smirking straight into the camera as a little bit of lens flare cuts in. We meet our next character at :52 in what appears to be a more candid wide shot of her sitting on the floor of the gym’s locker room. In slow motion we see her smile and swing  a bit of hair over her shoulder. Just a few seconds later we meet Zekisia who is also smiling, staring straight into the camera in a medium shot with lots of negative space above her head. Back to Clara at 1:54 we learn that she doesn’t listen to what a lot of people say because “it’s not what you think, it’s what I think at the end of the day.” This audio matches perfectly with the medium character portrait of Clara who in slow motion   looks strong and defiant, further strengthening her interview quote.

#2 Subtle Sound Design

As we hear our characters talk, all kinds of audio clips weave in and out to create the instant effect of place and environment.

At 1:04 even though we are inside following Zekesia as she walks through the school, we hear the audio from presumably a game where the team is dancing and hear the girls count “1 and 2 and” as she walks in slow motion. This little bit of game-day audio only lasts a few seconds, but it amplifies the energy and excitement of getting to know each of the team members.

Sometimes we see the flags twirling but don’t actually hear them. At other times we don’t see flags but do hear the flapping of them being waved around. It’s another subtle yet interesting touch that also adds intrigue.

Natural sound also works as a bit of a score, with the sound of the tuba players warming up at 1:40 working as a transition from one interview to the next. The sound comes in several seconds before you see the tuba players, adding to the “soundtrack” effect.

#3 Smart Editing… What Else Can I Call It?

The last technique that Ms. Collins exemplifies is hard to name, but I’ll call it smart editing. For example, at 2:20 we hear a teammate express why she wanted to be a dancer, saying “It’s pretty girls that express themselves, like big, small, all kinds of girls.” While we hear this we see a medium shot of the dancer’s legs walking in slow motion. Some of them are skinny, others more curvy, but they all dance along together in a straight line. The visuals pair well with what’s being heard in the interview.

Again around the three minute mark, the audio pairs well with the visuals. We hear this “Dance is a big part to a lot of girls because it relieves stress. It don’t make you think about a lot of things. All those sad things that happened to you? It just goes away.” We see one dancer high kicking with a wide grin on her face in slow motion. She looks like a perfectly carefree teen. But knowing that this story takes place in New Orleans, it’s hard for me to believe that she has such an easy life… and yet she really does appear totally happy and at ease while dancing. That moment made me stop and think and I credit that to the excellent combination of interview audio and visuals. I’ll definitely be watching for the second and third installments in this series!
