OK Go Plays with Perspective

OK Go is known for doing inventive videos, and “I Won’t Let You Go, is no exception. The band members rode experimental vehicles called the Uni-Cub from Honda. For the majority of the filming, they used a custom “multi-copter camera.” As per usual, it was shot in one take. The video was shot at double speed for crisp movement. OkGo was inspired by Busby Berkely musical numbers from the 1930’s. The director used revisualization software to get an idea of how it would look before shooting.

Their aren’t exactly transitions in the video, but rather seamless change of perspective from ground level to sky high overhead shot. Tracking shots keep the singers in frame as both the band and the camera keep moving. All the movements have to be in synch for it to have the visual appeal it that it does. We can see the marks they need to hit taped on the ground.

I like that we get to see the preparation for the video before the choreographed action starts at :17. We get to see the final checks before shooting the video.

At 1:06 we have a smooth functional transition when the camera moves ground level to well overhead before it comes back down at 1:47. It’s a zoom out function that allows us the audience, to see the rest of the performers as the video moves into the heart of the choreography.

We go overhead again at 2:28, possibly farther up this time. At 3:08 we come back down and go right into a 360 shot from within the circle. I think the director spins once too many times, but I like the perspective from inside the circle, looking at the performers.

At 3:28 we go airborne again and the performers create a massive grid. They create heart shapes, and faces of the band members by raising umbrellas in specific spots. They have the name of the video, “I Won’t let you down scroll across the bottom of the screen. I was amazed that they were able to have everyone in synch well enough to create scrolling text.

The multi-copter camera goes high enough for cloud to enter the frame at 4:33. The camera pans up, and we are treated to another 360 shot, this time looking out over the landscape, before fading to black. The music finishes over a minute before the videos does. I suspect the DP thinks that If you’ve watched the video to this point, you’ll want to see one more 360 shot.

  1. I’ve seen this video before and I have to be honest; I call bullshit. I get that people are super creative and can do all kinds of crazy stuff but dude… c’mon, give me a freaking break.

    I was so distracted thinking about how they did this in one take that I barely had time to think about how shitty their music is. Seriously, no one would buy a record if they hadn’t been hypnotized by one of their videos first.

    If they did in fact pull this off in one shot, then I will humbly apologize and buy every single one of their albums and listen to them every day. (Not really. Its horrible.) But I would ask for forgiveness and promptly apply for an internship shooting their next video.
