Shoot ‘n’ Move

This video surfaced the day after it was announced the Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant had a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder and would wait a few days to announce whether he would need season-ending surgery or not. This is present-tense story telling. While every media outlet is doing quick write-ups on the injury and every media organization is writing about its implications, The Players’ Tribune was tasked to make a quick-hit about Kobe’s doctor visit.

The video is in black and white. The camera is shaky, implying there was no tripod or monopod. The videographer may have got the call when all he had was a camera and had to make it work. The video starts with an L-cut of ESPN reporting on Kobe’s injury. Shakily, the camera follows Bryant out of an elevator and in a waiting room, pacing. The scene jump cuts to  a wide shot of Bryant in the doctor’s office, removing his jacket at 0:15 and jump-cuts again to Bryant taking off his shirt at 0:17. At 0:18 a shot of Bryant moving his shirt to the right side of his body is taken from the angle the level of the examination table Bryant is sitting on. The camera man cannot sit in one place. He is mostly likely leaving the camera on at all time and moving quickly to get another angle of the action, changing from medium and close-ups.

The shorts from 0:20 to 0:28 are jump cuts, signifying an abrupt change in action, but they are not so disruptive that our brains cannot comprehend what was happened in the time cut out from the shot. In editing, the cameraman worked with what he had. From 0:58 to 1:14, we stay with the wide shot of the Doctor explaining to Bryant his injury and then screen goes black, the ominous music continues to play, leaving us in suspense. A new angle with a tighter shot in shown of Bryant’s reaction to the news. Only room tone can be heard until you can faintly hear “Ok,” and the scene ends.

From this video, I took in how often the camera moved and was always filming. It was not the most technically sound in terms of steady shots, having B-roll to cover the jump cuts or always keeping the action in frame, but this piece works for three reasons. The first is the most obvious and that is access. Many people wanted to know how Bryant would react. They had the process leading to the reaction and then the reaction itself. Two, the immediacy of the piece in regards to current events. It was made so quickly from the announcement to the public that there is an audience for it. Lastly, the camera is always moving. It captures action from one angle and then moves somewhere else. It follows the action, sits in a tight space and moves. Focusing on key moments and moving out again.
