Can you hear me now?

So much audible information goes in one ear and out the other that we take it for granted. This video shows us how much we learn about a story with sounds alone. As we read in the Walter Murch article, sound is as critical as the visual image when it comes to telling a story. The visuals force you to see something but what you hear helps you decide how you feel about it. Here is a piece by an Oscar nominated animator Adam Pesapane or simply “PES”, who uses sound to send us on a journey that our eyes have to work hard to follow.

The asymmetrical relationship of sound and imagery still made my mouth water even though it shouldn’t ordinarily be appetizing. At 0:08, we get the first WTF moment when you see the knife and the grenade. For a split second I thought this was going to be a subversive anti-war animation but I was wrong. Instead its a clever story about change and transformation and how things aren’t always as they appear nor do they stay the same.

The familiar sound of slicing an avocado immediately registers as it would if you were seeing a real avocado but you’re still not sure what’s happening. Each vegetable has a non-edible counterpart that gets sliced, peeled and smashed in the molcajete, the stone bowl used to mix the ingredients. I wonder which are the actual vegetables and which were replaced with better sounding objects?  Having grown up with a molcajete in our kitchen, I can assure you that sound at 0:18 where the spoon hits the bowl, is real. At 0:22 we see the baseball lose its skin and its at that point your brain tells your eyes to just sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

Each sound is carefully recorded and layered frame by frame to match the action. Its more of a chore in animation to match action because you have to first create the action one frame at a time. For instance, how many frames does it take to cut the jalapeño into little houses? How many different sounds had to be created to match the action? The slicing of the object, the blade ringing, the thud of the cutting board, the individual pieces moving, the sound of the hands scooping them all up and the sound they make when they land in the bowl. That’s a lot of layered sound to create a short sequence.

The rest of the piece plays out with a specific sound quality in mind so the illusion isn’t broken. The baseball/onion is extra crunchy at 0:25 and the tomato is extra smushy at 0:44. The knife is extra knifey, the golfball/limes are extra juicy, and the lightbulb/jalapeño is just wrong. I get that he’s not going for a one to one comparison here but the experience is a great one and still left me hungry.

I’m glad you’ve chosen to feature a video that exemplifies the importance of good sound design. As a videographer sometimes seeing a stunning shot through a viewfinder is deceptive… We think we’ve nailed it but the truth is the visual element is only half of the story. “Fresh Guacamole” might at first seem like a video only stop-motion artists can draw inspiration from, but you’re right that we should all pay that much attention to sound in our pieces as well.
