In class, we’re reading “Telling True Stories,” an anthology of essays about nonfiction writing, and one of the recurring themes in the pieces is the idea of using specific reported details – temperature, touch, smell, and so on – to put the reader “inside the scene.” When you’re writing, you can easily report that cotton feels soft, a doorknob is cold or soup is salty. But how does one communicate these types of ideas with a filmed image?

This NYT Op-Doc shows a lot of ingenuity in using sensations to advance an idea – in this case, that homeless people are sleeping in a very uncomfortable, stressful place because they have nowhere else.

One standout sequence is a single long take of the inside of the bus that starts at 1:30. The camera is fixed, so the movement within frame of the back of the bus at 1:55 is dramatic, striking and disorienting. Immediately, one is reminded of how disorienting it can be to be half-asleep and trying to catch rest in a public place.

An even better example occurs at 5:51. The filmmaker has placed the camera next to the driver and we see out the front window as the bus pulls into a stop. The image is digitally stuttery in spots, unlike most of the shots in the doc up to this point. The camera visibly shakes as the bus rumbles to its stop. and the effect is uncomfortable and nauseating for the viewer. Imagine how people actually sleeping on that bus must feel as those vibrations hit them.
