The Marijuana Divide

As I am potentially going to cover the topic myself, I looked to the New York Times to see how they have reported on the legalization of Marijuana in Colorado.

The video sets up the setting of two scenarios. At the 0:18 mark, the filmmaker introduces the trend of combining unmotivated camera moves and including graphics. The camera moves show size and the seemingly endless amount of whatever the background is. The first is strains of marijuana being hung on a wire and the graphics give out facts about what is going on in these two towns in Colorado. The same technique is immediately used at 0:26.

The filmamakers uses a series of long shots to depict the natural beauty and the culture of Gunnison, CO and Crested Butte, CO. The only time the camera shows a medium shot within the first two minutes of the video is when showing A-roll. There are many shots of unmotivated camera movement such as that in the 2:02 mark. More than likely, these shots were not done on a dolly or jib, but rather a tripod set up either inside of the car or in the flatbed of a pickup truck.  The clear shots of signs and buildings out side with nearly-perfectly visible skies indicated that a ND Filter was used on the lens to be able to capture both in proper light and avoid “nuclear” lighting.

At the 3:32 mark, a rack focus is used on a close up shot of marijuana, showing some of the camera work creativity. You see all the of the nuggets look focused and then slowly become blurry while the background remains in focus. at the 8:38 mark we see a slow tilt of the camera, focusing on the fans and lowering to the plants. The shallow depth of field also showcases how much marijuana there is in the facilities.
