Best Ballet I’ve Ever Seen

This video is short and sweet. And funny!

It’s interview driven, and that’s where we get our story content and information. But we never see our interviewees in a traditional sit-down interview setting. Instead we hear their voices as we are treated to the stunning slo-motion imagery of their subway ballet moves.

The video seems to all take place within a single subway car. There are no establishing shots, wide shots, or anything really beyond the central story of the subway performers. It is very focused and it seems that each shot was carefully selected and timed to perfectly coincide with the music and the interview audio. The editing is like a ballet in that sense!

As videographers, this focused approach is something I’d like to emphasize as a takeaway from this video. It takes a quiet confidence to know what shots you need and what shots you don’t. Does this piece in any way suffer or lack from the absence of an establishing shot? Absolutely not! We don’t need a skyline or subway entrance to immediately get a sense of place from this piece. By choosing to only show close up and medium shots of the performers, the videographer keeps the focus of the story on the performers themselves, knowing that the stunning visual dichotomy of bored commuters inches away from the energetic dancers/acrobats/subway ballerinas is rich enough to carry us through the piece.

But just because the dancers are visually interesting doesn’t mean that the videographer can just stand in a corner and roll. And that’s certainly not what happened. I love the close ups and how little they revealed. In the beginning, we don’t see any faces, or whole bodies in motion. It’s just mere glimpses of exposed stomachs, legs flailing, and other body parts in slo-motion.

At 0:28 there is an excellent example of letting a subject enter the frame (without following the action with pans or tilts). For a few seconds we see a row of commuters seated on the subway. Then, as if by magic, a head enters the top of the frame, upside down.

At the same time, the motivation for our characters is revealed through the interview audio. So not only is the shot a reveal by virtue of a character coming into the frame, it also perfectly parallels the interview content which explains why these subway ballerinas do what they do.

0:34 is a nice bit of camera work that we should take note of. Slo-mo is again being employed here, but also there is a very subtle zoom in and pan upwards that lands and steadies just in time to see the performer swinging around the pole. This is a good example of anticipating the action. The videographer must have had some sense for where the performer was going to land, and deftly followed the action with their camera.

At 0:42 there’s some nice matched action, going from a close up of a foot holding onto a subway pole to a medium shot of the performer balancing upside down with his feet. Then the audio of “light feet!”, which again perfectly mirrors the action on the screen. The interviewee sounds prideful in their description. Then we see a smiling, proud face in close up at 0:48. I think this is a little bit like “action/reaction” because it shows the action of having light feet, and then the smiling reaction and pride of one of the performers.

0:58 is a a full body shot of a performer reaching out and interacting, perhaps even flirting, with some commuters who are just out of sight. This is timed to great effect with the interview audio “there are a lot of good looking 30-year olds.”

1:11 is another perfectly matched sequence of video and interview audio. Two feet are flipping up and pushing off of a subway window as we hear the interviewee say “I never really hit nobody, I probably just tapped a couple people.” The visuals emphasize the interview audio in a perfect, hilarious manner that is certainly not by accident. If I had to guess, the videographer/director/editor could anticipate that some audience members would be wondering “how do they move like this in a crowded subway car?” and then to answer the question, paired the interview audio with some of the most remarkable shots of feet flying through the air. The imagery stands in contradiction to what’s being heard, so the combined effect makes their performance all the more remarkable.

In the closing credit sequence, we here natural audio of the subway car passing through a tunnel and a message reminding patrons to offer seats to the elderly as an act of courtesy. It’s a nice ending that seems a little tongue in cheek. These performers aren’t occupying any of the seats, leaving ample space for elderly riders! The cheeky close is a nice ending to this short and visually stunning piece.
