Celebrating the Citizenry in “The Warriors of Qiugang”

The documentary short feature “The Warriors of Qiugang” was co-produced by Yale Environment 360 and nominated for a 2011 Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject). It’s one of a trilogy by filmmakers Ruby Yang and Thomas Lennon, whose “The Blood of Yingzhou District” won the 2006 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short.

This is an exciting piece for me, because it demonstrates how, while good documentary filmmakers can capture a good subject well, great filmmakers can both tell the story and elevate it. The image at 26:34 is one of my favorite examples (as is a similar shot at 25:01) – the shooter uses deep focus to make the earnest environmental activists look like an old-school Chinese propaganda poster.

The filmmakers are also not shy about incorporating animation into their piece, but again, they don’t just communicate data and information with these techniques, they evoke feeling. Consider the transition at 6:09 from a chemical Risk Code statement to a photographic representation of the code in action – a pistol shot of a cut that jerks the audience all the way over to the filmmakers’ side. It also mirrors a dissolve at 6:25 that is both small (a match edit to a small area at the middle top of the animated map) and extremely big (melodramatic).

I wonder if one idea here was to make a piece that ironically plays a bit like propaganda, but with the purpose of valorizing people separate from (and at odds with) their government.
