Sounds of South Memphis

From the first frame to the last, this film submerges the audience in a world rarely seen in America. Yet it is America. From the soundscape and industrial musical score, to the intensely personal cinematography, to the invisible editing, this film reaches a level of visual zen that paralyzed me for a quite a while.

I want to focus on the score, nat sound, and voiceover. Let’s start with the score. The feeling and affect it had on me was one of gratitude and sadness. At 2:21, you hear what’s clearly a harmonica but its been slowed down or in some way altered adding to the surreal imagery. Another example is at 4:07. You can hear the harmonica sound and hear a screeching of sorts while on screen there’s a man playing the harmonica and a young boy we’ll see again later, singing and giving the impression that these primal sounds are coming from them.

Nat sound is sparsely present but alive enough to keep you connected to the action. At 5:22 there is a delicate hand off from the score and voice over to a man singing what sounds like a hook from what could be a great song. At 6:23 you can hear the fireworks. One of the most poignant moments is at 7:24 when you see a woman singing but you don’t hear her. You don’t need to. At 8:35 there is another a capella performance that lends more detail to the lives of the people of South Memphis. At 10:54 we see the boy again, this time we hear him singing in a powerfully adult voice.

The voice over is done with no vocal effects added. Just a clean recording of this young mans observations about his life and the world around him. Its done in a way that sounds like a series of one liners about life yet they combine to tell the story of struggle and perseverance. They strike a pace that matches the slow motion of the video and the flow of the music. His voice is not morbid but not happy. Its painfully real and yet oddly comforting. He’s imparting a kind wisdom that only a person who’s lived this life can.
