One hell of a book trailer

I’ve seen enough book trailers over the years to know they’re a necessary part of sales and marketing. But never one like this. It taught me something about the world we live in, about how disgustingly comfortable I am, and about how journalism should work. All that without even buying the book.

After the blazingly fast and perfectly crafted elevator pitch Óscar Martínez delivers, he breaks down the entire immigration process in about three minutes. Not how people become U.S. citizens, but the hell they go through to get here. The producer of this hastily put together video uses a music bed and amazing photos and video that look original and heartbreaking.

At 3:38 he says the atrocities committed against immigrants trying to come to the U.S. are worse than anything he’s seen in his 10 years as a photojournalist covering the Iraq war or anything else in Latin America. The statements are supported by a continuous stream of shockingly real photos and video. 

At 6:00 he begins to tell the audience about how comfortable we’ve all become with seeing pain and suffering around the world. At 6:14 there is a cleverly placed cut-away to the audience looking somber. One person even puts her head down, seemingly in response to his harsh comments.

At 6:52 he says you have to live the story to understand the story and only then do you have the right to share the story. Brilliant. I’ve recently spent three months with a prominent writer who doesn’t really care about his subject and only wants to sell books. The lack of love for the subjects makes them hollow and boring. I for one, will not waste my time like that again.
