Funny Visual Storytelling in a Serious Piece

The Penn State child molestation scandal is heavy stuff: emotionally damaged boys, a betrayed community, a sick, dangerous assistant couch, and the powerful men who didn’t approve of him but nevertheless enabled him. Any documentary that explores community reaction to the crimes and their coverup will be intense.

What this Op-Doc ingeniously does is use visual language to advance a second, more comedic narrative that plays alongside the more somber music and title cards.

The video opens (0:15-0:40) with a standard set of closeups, medium shots, and finally, an establishing wide shot of a group of statues. It’s shot at night, inviting shadows and gloom, but in general, this sequence would not be out of place in an ad or a traditional news story. Framing and shallow depth of field are deployed to keep these images looking clean and traditional.

At 1:20, there’s a disruption. A title card calls attention to a “lone protestor,” providing the only movement on camera, so we look at him. At first, the title card balances the composition, but after it fades, we are left with this image. Notice how the protester appears to have walked into the same depth of field as the statue, and how the composition of this shot looks cluttered and unbalanced. The unanswered question here is “What happens when this protester disrupts order at this monument?”

We see conflicts play out between the protester and other fans. Meanwhile, the visual story progresses, as the monument is turn down. In one humorous shot, a bevy weight, presumably the staue, is hauled off like a asggin bag of trash (5:15)

The conclusion of the piece offers a visual punchline to the setup, as the traditional sequence at the start of the piece is parodied with a closeup of a new monument (6:02).

It’s followed in sequence by a slow pan down (6:07), in contrast with the static opening shots.

The camera movement is motivated, as it reveals a contrast in size. Essentially, this is a variation on a visual gag from the 1982 film “This is Spinal Tap.”
