Looking for successful Portland documentary directors led me to Brian Lindstrom, who achieved some visibility last year with his full-length film “Alien Boy: the Life and Death of James Chasse.” Funded via a Kickstarter campaign and shot by Gus Van Sant collaborator John Campbell, the movie introduces us to James “JimJIm” Chasse, a familiar character in Portland’s 1980s indie rock scene (so familiar that TWO bands from the scene, the Wipers and the Neo Boys, wrote songs about him). Chasse suffered from schizophrenia but remained close to his family into adulthood – his life was cut short when he died in Portland police custody after they beat him, then neglected to provide him with medical care.

The project garnered special attention from The Oregonian, which quoted Lindstrom’s mentor calling it a “major, major step up for him.” It’s a riveting, jaw-dropping watch, partly because Lindstrom has access to filmed court testimony from the officers involved (who do not look good), plus ugly footage from the police station where Chasse was literally carried after his arrest.

But he also makes a few simple choices that are quite interesting. For one, he presents Chasses’ art and writing, along with court documents, with animation that reveals one element at a time, guiding us through each document or piece. His interviews are all shot against a plain gray background, which focuses the viewer’ attention on the look and mannerisms of each subject, as if to put all of them (and us) on a spectrum of mental health alongside Chasse. I sometimes forgot whether I was watching a reporter or an old friend.
