A Perfect Example

I think this short video about the measure to increase the minimum wage in Seattle to $15 is a perfect example of what we should aim to produce throughout our time in this program.

First of all, it covers both sides of the issue (albeit the leanings of the director seem pretty obvious.) In addition to having major players, like the mayor, involved in the video to lend it credence, there is also excellent footage of the campaigns leading up to the vote, as well as the realtime reaction to the vote’s successful passing. Although there isn’t a strong unanswered question running throughout, it definitely adds to the overall quality of the piece to have those elements.

In addition to having all the important voices and events covered in the video, it also did something I hope to achieve with my pieces. Instead of basic cinematography, the video is trying to elevate the medium by playing with a mixture of still photos and video. I particularly liked the effect they employed by starting out with what seemed like a photo, but then letting the frame play out into an actual moving image. It was as if the pictures came alive. It also seemed to increase the empathy I felt for the speakers to be able to watch real-time footage coupled with stills.

Lastly, the interview shots themselves were very inspirational. With the subjects looking straight into the camera, it felt like a direct appeal to the audience. And when one of the subjects became emotional and started to cry, I appreciated that it wasn’t a 2-shot interview. It just allowed me to be in the moment with her, and really feel her emotions.

I hope we all produce work of the quality before our program is over!
