Hey ‘shroom-folk, here’s that project from last year I mentioned about the matsutake hunters near Crater Lake:

As part of a three-person team tromping through the woods trying not to get lost, it was a joy to focus on the stills and have someone else handling the video. Patrick Farrell combined skillful interviews with handheld shots in a skillful way that can be difficult out in the deep field. Access was also a challenge, particularly with the language barrier, but luckily the person we found with the best command of English was happy to have us along for a morning hunt.

For the record, I found the taste of matsutake to be reminiscent of celery, pepper and cauliflower.

As the video begins, we are immediately thrust into the woods with mushroom hunters John and Soulinh Souvannasay.

“See that bump? That’s what we want right here,” John says, popping a matsutake mushroom out of the ground. “Boom! It’s like Mario Brothers, man.”

Thus his enthusiasm is clear from the opening scene, as he uses video game language to describe a hunt that so many people depend their livelihoods upon.

Farrell begins a voiceover to summarize the mushroom hunt. The voiceover fades away at :30, when Farrell pans the camera, following a noisy semi truck along the highway to the Chemult sign. This is as near to an establishing overall shot as one can get in a flat town with not even a three-story building.

When a human voice is heard again, it belongs to John Souvannasay, who has now been placed in a standard interview format, a medium shot in nice light, looking at the interviewer.

The rest of the video is a cycle of tight shots of mushrooms popping out of the sandy soil, and medium shots of hunters talking or selling their wares. At 2:45, Farrell uses camera motion to follow the Souvannasays through the forest on their quest while the voiceover ties the story together.
