Story without words

As we are nearing our deadline for our assignment, I looked to an award winning piece for inspiration.  Though there are words in this film, it does not drive the plot and that is exactly what I look to do.

First off, there is no music in this film. It is driven and described by the natural sound the protagonist in the story hears everyday. Director Andrew Hinton, caught the sound of a cliche rooster making its morning call, which can be heard just before the 1:00 minute mark. The filmmaker also keeps the trend on no music all throughout the credits. If Amar gets no music throughout his day of working two jobs and going to school, neither do we. It is the perfect example of a L-cut.

Secondly, Amar is on the move all day, so there is motivated camera movements to keep up with his travels. The curious cat in me wonders of the if the filmmaker was riding a bicycle or moped alongside Amar or catching a ride from someone else. This is only the second film I’ve seen since we started this course in which I am convinced the film maker was by himself with the subject.
