LUCEO: Few and Far Between

“It’s still here,” Red Martin says, seven-and-a-half minutes into LUCEO’s Few and Far Between multimedia piece, which was edited by Rob Finch from hours of video and thousands of still photos shot by the six-person collective during road trips through 13 states. What’s still here is Middle America, the simulacrum with the remaining hint of truth. We see guns, wrestling, Punxatawney Phil, flirting high schoolers, plastic-wrapped mattresses, and a snowfall (rather than a Snow Fall.)

LUCEO founding member Matt Eich described the project as a way to bring together the normally far-flung members of the collective in an aligned, forceful way.

“[We] embarked on our first truly collaborative experience,” he said, “examining the backbone of America by visiting small-towns across the country in concentrated trips, working as a cohesive unit to build something bigger than any one of us could create on our own.”

With such a wealth of material, Finch’s task was a difficult one.

“As the editor of the piece,” he said, “my challenge was to try to come up with some sort of structure. LUCEO did not shoot it like a cohesive story with a traditional narrative arc, etc. It was more like they were dipping their toes in a bunch of different ponds all around the country. And, it was six different people doing the dipping. So, trying to focus this piece was a bit like trying to herd really talented cats.”

The members of LUCEO lived in an RV on their road trip, and many of the shots from the moving vehicle serve to propel the narrative from town to town, scrubbing the aesthetic clean, helping the viewer enter a new, yet contextually similar world.
