Objectives

  • Become acquainted with copyright as a historic, cultural and economic paradigm and its value and pertinence to creative works.
  • Explore the changing nature of copyright in the context of “Remix Culture” and the “Fifth World”
  • Examine your own and others values and paradigms of ownership and authorship of cultural media.
  • Evaluate the meanings of real and fake and examine their intersection with personal and cultural identity and authenticity.

Reflection

The era in which we live is truly one of kind. The technology we have and the resources we have available to use at all times of the day is astounding. When I first starting reading Lessig’s article about culture, I thought that it was little crazy that there were two different types. The first being “RO” which is “fueled by professionals and “RW” which is “fueled by both professionals and amateurs” (84). As I thought about it more, it makes complete sense.

Due to all the technology that surrounds us, anyone can remix culture. One professional artist can come out with a song only to be remade and reproduced from someone’s home. All different types of people from all different places take a so-called original piece and put a spin on it, making it their own. There has never been a time before that literally anyone with a computer and an internet connection could do this and that is why I believe copyright is such a huge part of recent history.

Future

This assignment made me really question how authentic my generation is and what the future holds for artists. I have always heard people say that movies follow the same plot line just different things happen in the middle because there are only so many stories to be told. Does this mean that is the same for music, paintings or any other kind of art? As generations come and go, do we forget about some of the originals and mistake today’s artists as authentic? To say the least, this assignment will have me questioning many of today’s cultural phenomenon’s that happen in the art world.
