IPRC Documentary

The Independent Publishing Resource Center (IPRC) located at 917 SW Oak # 218 in Portland, Oregon is a non-profit committed to fostering the production and dissemination of zines. This mission is achieved through workshops, public workspaces, and an extensive zine library. The IPRC has been invaluable to me in relationship to my zine focused courses and research. Do-It-Yourself Empowerment is the center’s new documentary.

Convergence: How Five Trends will Reshape the Social Sectorconvergencecover is a new report issued by the James Irvine Foundation that examines “the challenges and opportunities inherent in convergence and suggests ways nonprofits can successfully navigate the changes.”

IMG_0554For the past six months, without success,  I have been trying to locate examples of zines produced in China. On Sunday I had the opportunity to experience the China Design Now exhibit at the Portland Art Museum. Included in the exhibit were examples of independent music zines from the mid to late 90s. The zines on display were created in Shenzhen and distributed for free in “music bars.” Titles on display included Q-zine, Hollywood Disco Bar Communication, and New Masses.

Excellent websites associated with this exhibit have been launched by the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Portland Museum of Art .
