Save the Bees

Save the Bees, an Issue talked about over many different social media platforms and many organizations, but what exactly is it? Save the Bees is a campaign for an issue being faced right now. For the first time, bumblebees are on the animals endangered list. Bees are an insect that produce one third of the food we eat today, yet out of the 363,987 bee colonies in the United States 21.1% of those colonies were lost during 2016-2017 according to a 2017 survey done by Bee Informed, a non-profit organization connected with over, 4,963 beekeepers in the United States.

Many people are aware of the Save the Bees campaign but are unaware of what they can do to help. In a 2013 interview between the Moon Magazine and Dan VanEngelsdorp a Ph.D. graduate and beekeeper himself, VanEngelsdorp suggests people should have meadows and flowers in front of their house instead of lawns and decorative rocks because it is beneficial to bees and other beneficial pollinators. A big reason bee populations have started to decrease is because people have continued to get rid of plants that bees feed from and pollinate.

There are some mixed opinions on whether the Save the Bees campaign is actually as important as experts claim. There have been cases where people have disagreed with environmentalist’s ideas and said that animals going existent is just a part of nature. In a speech on Saving the planet, George Carlin an American stand-up comedian, actor, author and social critic states how he is tired of people saying we need to save everything, like the bees. States we all have to save something now a days. We want to talk care of the planet but we don’t even know how to take care of ourselves.

However, Bees don’t just fly around, they do so much for the planet and without bees’ people won’t be able to take care of themselves. According to a 2014 study done by Mother Nature Network, losing bees would not only take away fruits and vegetables but also could make us lose our beef and dairy products. Honeybees annually pollinate billions worth of seeds and crops in the U.S. Save the Bees is a campaign to help remind people that this issue is not something to be pushed under the rug, it’s something to take action on and create change.
