Meet the Geologists!

The Diligent Students

Allen Lerner is a first year Ph.D. student at the University of Oregon studying volcanic degassing, primarily at Mount St. Helens. In his free time he enjoys mountain biking, cooking pasta, and watering his air plants.

Claire Getz just graduated from the University of Oregon, where her thesis focused on measuring bubble number densities and vesicularities of small pumice clasts from the initial fall deposits at the base of the Huckleberry Ridge Tuff, Member A. In Claire’s free time she enjoys long naps.

Despite doing a senior thesis looking at pumice bubble walls up-close and personal, Claire is still happy to be doing pumice counts.

Ben Heath is a first year Ph.D. candidate at the University of Oregon studying Santorini volcano using seismic techniques. In his free time, Ben runs everywhere, and eats a lot of tacos.

Adam Nordling is a senior undergraduate at James Madison University. For his undergraduate research he has been measuring OH concentrations in plagioclase from the initial fall deposits at the base of the Huckleberry Ridge Tuff, Member A. In his free time, Adam loves anything to do with the outdoors, and everything baseball (and sports).

Liz Mctaggart is a junior undergraduate at James Madison University. For her undergraduate research project she has been measuring OH concentrations in plagioclase phenocrysts from the initial fall deposits at the base of the Huckleberry Ridge Tuff, Member A. Liz enjoys traveling to mineral shows with her close, dorky friends, and spending time with her adorable dog Cassie. She also is a master pizza maker.

Perhaps I will find all of the answers in this clast…

Dylan Colon is a fourth year Ph.D. student studying large volume volcanic eruptions associated with the impingement of the Yellowstone hot spot beneath eastern Oregon. In his free time, Dylan enjoys rock climbing, skiing, and yelling at Matlab.

Dylan is unimpressed, as he has seen better columns elsewhere.

Madison Myers is a fourth year Ph.D. student studying the initial fall deposits of three large volume, caldera forming eruptions that preserve different features at their opening phases. The goal is to understand the processes that control the onset of a caldera forming eruption. In her free time… (wait, Madison doesn’t have any free time).
