Among all of the intensive learning process in BA-352, we were required to find a job posting and develop a resume and cover letter targeted to that posting. An efficient Resume and cover letter can be a good way to communicate with recruiters for the jobs I desired for. By showing recruiters the best of my experiences in a constructive and persuasive way, it can give me some competitive advantages when looking for a job.
Above is my resume prior to the beginning of this class. I followed a template in Microsoft Word, putting no creativity or effort into the design. This resume is far to focused on my skills area, and I put too much experience that I thought it would work the best for them…. It was two pages long and I did think it was a big of deal. What it really matters to the recruiters as I learned from the class is that I show them what they needed for the qualification. But, I thought this was how a resume should, just using a template – but I was definitely wrong.
Resume First Draft after Career Center’s comments
After Jessica Best came to our class and shared some important components on how to craft an effective resume, I have found much to improve my resume (Above). I made it more focused on my experiences and shrink it to only one page for my resume. Also, I used many recommended verbs to craft my experience sentences. I thought it would be good at this time.
Following our resume workshop and meeting individually with Tod, the GTF for our class, I have learned much more to improve. I found that the bullet points shouldn’t be tasks but rather things I accomplished and how I did them. Also, He commented that my resume was more directed towards Accounting, but that is something I can’t exactly change because it’s just where my experiences have been but not necessarily what I am interested in. He suggested that I need to have more transferable skills listed in my resume, such as communication skills and leadership behaviors. Although I found this difficult to revise, I changed the bullet points to begin with action verbs and describe specific things I accomplished and how I did them.
As included in the above document, the last part of this section was creating a cover letter for our specific job posting. I found this a big challenge because I had only written one cover letter before and my friend had helped me most of the way. I was nervous because, unlike the resume, we wouldn’t have the chance to revise it. But I found writing the cover letter to not be as daunting because I was writing about myself and my passions. It was hard to include all the necessary parts on one page and this was noted on my grading rubric. If I were to rewrite my cover letter for this job opportunity, I would make it more concise so that I could include a recap and leave a lasting image in the employer’s mind.
