Action Plan: Emotional Intelligence

Where I am Now
In terms of self-awareness I do not have very much self-confidence. Which sometimes mean that I care too much about how people look at me. In terms of others I can usually read how someone is feeling by their tone and actions. I have empathy for team members that work hard to contribute everything they can to a project. Another weakness that I have is managing conflict, but if there is a bond already built within a team when a conflict arises it makes it easier to address it as a team instead of one on one.

Where I Want to Go
It is really important to me to gain more self-confidence and become comfortable with talking to team members about conflicts that may arise in the project process. There are almost always some sorts of conflicts that teams have to work through in order to get to the finished product and I want to be able to deal with them more promptly. I would like to be able to put my emotions aside and address problems professionally and sensitively with compassion.

Relationship management is another area I would like to thrive in. Sometimes I can behave a little bit timid in a new team. It would be ideal to be able to build many relationships with team members because it is an important part of success.

Development and Implementation
The key point for me to succeed in these two areas of emotional intelligence I need to step outside of my comfort zone. To do so I need to put my self out there and challenge myself to develop relationships with team members. Relationships can make or break a team and having this in the back of my mind will push me to develop these relationships.

Confronting team members with problems is a hard, but crucial point to developing a strong team. Once a problem arises I need to state how I feel about it then and there instead of holding it in. Keeping it to myself the moment it starts to bother me hurts the team and myself. This is incentive for me to change my more passive aggressive actions when problems occur.

Measuring Progress and Adjusting Accordingly
As I mentioned in the previous action plan it is a good idea for me to post my progress on my personal goals. In doing so I am holding myself accountable for the progress I am or am not making. If there is a problem that I do not feel comfortable confronting then I will proceed to ask for advice from peers and possibly team members.

Team members can help me to evaluate my progress on my personal goals and help me adjust my strategies if I am not making progress to pursue the goals.
