The first step I took when starting the cover was looking through the folders for my favorite group of photos since magazines are very visual. I found that my favorite group of photos came from the bee story and from that I found the portrait picture, which I believe is the best suited for a cover.
Because I think that the portrait photo is so strong I decided to make the emphasis of the page the man in the photo. That’s why I decided to make his name very large and in the center of the page, so that it is almost like he is introducing himself to the audience.
The story of bees seems to me like it would be in a magazine that had more of an earthy/outdoors/ do it yourself vibe. That’s the angle that I decided to work from. I like the look of G3 instead of using the entire Gateway 3 title because I thought it looked more appealing, modern, and it didn’t overwhelm the page. Because G3 is the title of the magazine I wanted to make it stand out. I choose the color yellow because it was bold but also went well with the colors from the image.
After I choose the yellow color I went to the color scheme website and found complimentary colors that fit in with the warm look that I was trying to achieve. It suggested the color that I used for the additional subheadings on the page and it worked perfectly. I knew that the color of the name was very important because it was so big. I choose a darker color so that the size of the text was not overpowering. Then for the subtext I made it smaller but used the same color as the G3 to balance out the page.
