Technology

What jumped out to me most in this weeks reading, “Computer Graphics: Effects of Origins”, was the portion about special effects and computer generated characters in movies. We are able to alter the looks of someone so significantly with special effects that they are not even identifiable as themselves. An example of this is the character Gollum from the movie Lord of the Rings. The actor for Gollum wore a suit the entire time during acting that allowed for him to be able to be heavily altered with the use of computers and special effects. Lord of the Rings was first released in 2001 and the special effects then were amazing and very realistic. This example and the reading assignment made me really think about what is going to come next for computer graphics? It seems that we are so incredibly advanced already with computer graphics that it seems almost impossible for them to get better. I wonder about what the next big move will be with computer-generated art?

I really liked how your brought up the question about what is going to be the next big move in technology. This is something that I have often thought about as well. Computer graphics have advanced so much, which makes me think about all the transitions of other types of art as well. Computer graphics such as the ones used in the Lord Of The Rings are a whole type of art by themselves, a type of art that I almost didn’t consider art until reading this article and almost considered them just technology since it is relatively new. Maybe the advancement of computer graphics is where art is headed, and more digital and technological pieces of art will be the new more common types of art in the future.

I too find this topic interesting: the extent of which computers can morph or create people or characters. Another recent example is the Dove chocolate commercial where they used CGI to create Audrey Hepburn. As most of us know, she past away years ago, but with technology people are able to create a Audrey Hepburn that is young and alive. Some people thought this was creepy, and I think it definitely can be, but it is also amazing what technology can do. As for the future, I prefer not to ponder what may happen, but instead be amazed and fascinated when it actually happens. Then again, I’m not the one looking to develop the next big thing in the world of technology.

Joan, that is a great example of what I was talking about. It is so crazy to me that we are now able to create things that once existed in our world, but now no longer do. Another example of this was when the hologram of Tupac preformed at Coachella Music Festival. A legendary performer who past away years ago was able to come back from the dead in order to give a performance all because of how technologically advanced we are.
