Spring Sketchbook Collective Schedule

Below is the spring schedule for the JSMAC Sketchbook Collective. Prompts will be posted to the blog and Facebook page every Wednesday. Meetups are every other Sunday. Bring your own supplies and sketchbook (if you have one),  otherwise we have sketchbooks available. These meetups are drop-in, no skill necessary and all are welcome! They are mostly self-led, as each of us works in different ways, but there will be some direction if wanted, and there are always opportunities for feedback. This is a great way to relax and put your creativity to work.

The Open Figure Drawing at MECCA are open, pay-what-you-want figure drawing sessions with a nude model. MECCA hosts these every Thursday but we will go twice as a group.

We’ll be outside mostly, but if it happens to rain we can work inside the JSMA.

Thursday, April 28, 4:00 MECCA – Open Figure Drawing
Sunday, May 1, 11:00 Vero Espresso Patio
Sunday, May 15, 11:00 Campus (outdoors); meet in front of JSMA
Thursday, May 19, 4:00 MECCA – Open Figure Drawing
Sunday,  May 29, 11:00 Campus (outdoors); meet in front of JSMA

Sketching at the JSMA

Join us this Sunday at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art to sketch! We’ll meet at 11:00 at the front desk. Bring a pencil; pens are not allowed in the upstairs galleries.

JSMAC Sketchbook Prompt: Do an art critique or analysis of a work that you are drawn to in the museum. First spend a few minutes just looking. Sketch the artwork, then write your comments or a reflection. Why were you drawn to the particular artwork? What did you see that intrigued you? What meaning can you gather? What formal elements do you see and how do they convey meaning?

JSMAC Sketchbook Collective at MNCH

You will find plenty of sketching inspiration at The Museum of Natural and Cultural History this Sunday, February 21st. The JSMAC Sketchbook Collective will meet in the lobby at 11:00.

We all drew from imagination during childhood, taking inspiration from dinosaurs, the creatures in our dreams, or other mysteries of our minds. Give yourself permission to open up your imagination. Maybe you decide to draw a fascinating creature that you already know about, or maybe it’s entirely made up. Why did you give it the features that you did? What does it do? What is its story?

JSMAC Sketchbook Collective: Urban Sketching

The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art was just nominated as the most beautiful building in Oregon by thrillist.com (https://www.thrillist.com/travel/nation/the-most-beautiful-building-in-every-state). Think about what building or space you find most interesting, and take a moment this week to recreate it in your sketchbook. Why do you like it there? What does it mean to you? What did you observe during this process that you never noticed before?

And just in case you’re super into drawing buildings, cityscapes, spaces and other architecture, this is a great book: The Art of Urban Sketching
