This Artifact is a demonstration of the following objectives:

  • Explore the notion of food as an art form
  • Considers an American cultural view of art

A photo I took of my assignment subject making ribs. He views this process and the outcome as art.

For this assignment, I chose to interview a friend about his views of food as an art form. I then put together a visual video with him sharing his views and ideas in response to my questions. I drew the questions from class readings and other materials. I asked about the idea of “making special” that Dissanayake informed us of, as well as the aesthetic reaction from Telfer’s essay.

This interview helped me understand another view, aside from my own, of how food may or may not be viewed as an art form.

This video is an example of one American’s perspective of art in relation to food. The assignment helped me demonstrate two objectives. Exploring food as a creative form of art and exploring the cultural aspect of food as art to an American.

You can view this video here.

In the future, I think this topic makes an interesting dinner conversation. There are many different views on whether food is art and the circumstance which can make it art. I would love to continue to hear people’s views in both the American culture and cultures around the world. I found this topic to be one of the most interesting in this course so far, and I will continue to explore it.
