This Artifact is a demonstration of the following objectives:
- Explore a brief history of Western Art
- Evaluate multiple perspectives for evaluating art

This is an example of two things I personal view as art for myself: Fashion and this particular graphic which I made in InDesign. I’m not artistic when it comes to painting or sculpting, but I like to think I am when it comes to designing documents and fashion.
In this piece, I responded to an essay by Ellen Dissanayake about what she believes art is really for. I discuss some of the evolution process art has gone through, although I discuss it further in this essay assignment. This discussion assignment was in response to an insight that I got from her piece. In particular, I highlighted her idea of palaeoanthropsychobiological and “making special.”
Since it is difficult to understand how we currently value art without understanding how we have evaluated it in the past, this assignment forced me to learn a brief history of Western Art. Two past views of art are modernism and post-modernism, but Dissanyake also talks about how cave men, Romans, and ancient Greeks used art.
This leads into her idea of art as something where a group of people work to make something special. This can be a number of things from cooking to dancing to rituals to painting faces. Appreciating and understanding her perspective, as well as some of my classmates, accomplished the goal of evaluating multiple perspectives for evaluating art. I look further into how others evaluate art when concerning food here.
You can view my discussion here.
In the future, I would like to be more open to different forms of art. I recently went to the Louvre and although many find this place to be filled with art and fascination, I found myself to be rather bored. My boyfriend, whom I went with was curious the entire time we stayed. I think this was a missed opportunity for me to understand how he values art and how other value art too. In the future, I would like to work harder to understand the perceptions of art for others.
