While roaming around on Remix Planet, I found an article that related to one of my interests: fashion. If any of you have seen Exit Through the Gift Shop or worn anything Obey, you should know Shepard Fairey. Although Exit Through the Gift Shop was about Banksy, Fairey was important in the same movement. The article was an interview with Fairey and Rick Klotz, another remix entrepreneur. Fairey is most famous for his morphing of Andre the Giant for skate wear brand Obey’s logo. I thought it was interesting that in the interview Fairey shared his realization of why people wanted his work, “I realized that he wasn’t just interested in an Obey shirt or an Iggy Pop shirt – it was specifically the merging of the two images that he was after.” Fairey has made his living on creating new images from multiple images or changing a single image to make it new. Although his Obey work was more popular years ago, people prioritized it as if it were a famous painting or sculpture. I love thinking of fashion this way. Fashion designers put just as much effort into their art as others, but are often over looked, but they have copyrights and patents too (think Christian Louboutin’s red sole or Lululemon’s waistband).
