Creative Spirituality: Discussion

In the presentation video, I enjoyed seeing people invest their energy in events that put them in touch with their spirituality.

The first woman, the way she spoke about her art was simply beautiful. You could tell that she has a deep, spiritual connection with her work. It is a natural process to her, almost as if she would be sick without it.

I loved how the second woman talked about patience and time. Her art is not something you rush. I don’t think spirituality is something you can rush either.

I think it is important for our understanding to note that a few people in the video referenced being raised with religion, but it is clearly different from what they find spiritual. That being said, the two can be, and often are, tied together.

I heard the word “ritual” come up multiple times in the video, which makes me wonder about the link between ritual and spirituality. For me, how I connect with my spiritual, inner self is through ritual. I think it could be argued that their art is a ritual, and I’m sure they have rituals about they way they create their art.

The final man said some important things. He noted how you can become “one with the universe.” It think this important when it comes to spirituality, and I think it is a key take away for understanding spirituality. He also noted how one of the problems with art is that people just look at it. They don’t “enter the realm the artist was involve in,” which is ideal for understanding a piece of art.

I think this video was a great addition to our class. We’ve spoke a lot about different ways of creating art and I think this goes hand in hand with that. Although most of the people in the video were creating things I would consider art before taking this course, I am now open to viewing spiritual rituals as art.
