Using Technorati, I came across a long-loved lifestyle website, Refinery29. Although it was found on Technorati as a blog, I categorize it as a lifestyle website. However, the line between the two is blurring more every day. I follow R29 on Pinterest and Twitter, yet I always discover something new when I am on its site.
This time when I was on the website I saw an interesting article called “The 7 Deadly Sins of Fashion.” Naturally, I had to take a look. Most of the suggested tips I agree with for myself, however there is more to be said.
The article did open with somewhat of a disclosure about rules being made to be broken. To go along with that, I think that style is an extension of your personality, and most fashion “rules” limit that freedom. On the other hand, most of these rules are courtesy.
Rule number 3, “almost-fits” is a rule I believe everyone should live by. This rule was about clothing that is clearly too big for you (or too small). Following this rule may help you get a job and be taken more seriously. Tom Ford once said, “Dressing well is a form of good manners.”
Another one of the obvious (to me) rules was not to dress in cultural pieces that you are unfamiliar with the significance of such as headdresses. Do you remember the Victoria Secret Fashion Show 2014 issue? I guarantee Victoria Secret’s offended customers and investors remember.
So as long as your clothing fits, doesn’t offend cultural values, and is an expression of yourself, have fun with it.
