About Me

Jordan Montero

Jordan Montero is a Journalism major at the University of Oregon. He will be entering his third year in the fall of 2017. He’s interested in music and music journalism. As an Arts & Culture writer for The Daily Emerald, he hopes to one day make music journalism his career. For Gateway, Jordan decided to focus on alternative medicine as his issue. This issue is important to Jordan Montero because he believes that there is a whole world of healing that most people may be unaware of, and spreading awareness may show someone the method of healing that they need. He enjoyed focusing on alternative medicine because it allowed him to meet many different types of people from all walks of life.

Jordan Montero first became interested in this issue because of the numerous visual and story opportunities it seemed to offer. Jordan learned many things through his research. One of the more interesting things that Jordan learned is the consistent capitalist pursuits for all types of medical treatment. Even in alternative medicine, everybody wants to make money. Jordan doesn’t necessarily think that it’s a bad thing, but he found that it kind of surprised him because he had an impression that alternative healers cared foremost about their healing instead of their business.

Looking towards the future of alternative medicine, Jordan believes that journalism will play a huge role in raising the public’s awareness of it. It’s the media’s (more specifically, the medical-based media) job to inform the public on the all the pros and cons of alternative medicine as the consequences of alternative medicine become more and more apparent. With government agencies now established in efforts to study the effects of alternative medicine, it’s the media’s job to report them. There seems to be a consistent goal for alternative medicine in alternative medicine practitioners, and that’s integration. With the help of the media, that goal can be more seriously pursued.
