Strength:
* Model the Way:
I am excel at doing what I expect other people to do. For example, when I was a high school student, I was a sub-leader of a jazz music band club. During our practice time, some members were not practicing but chatting with others. I thought it is not good enough to only warn them, so what I did is showing them how we should focus on practicing the instrument by myself. By doing so, those people noticed that they have to act like I did. So, I believe if I want others to do as I expected, I should take the initiative to act.
* Encourage the Heart:
I always respect my other team members. If they did a very good job, I would praise them and would be really proud of them. Since I understand positive emotion brings the team many benefits, I often try my best to behave positively to others and encourage them to work on the group project. When I find other team member needs help, I will support them both verbally and physically.
* Enable Others to Act:
I usually observe other people and I am good at knowing strengths and weakness of each person. By doing so, I can enable others to control the team as a whole and to know what and how should each person do for accomplishing our goal. I also like to hear variable ideas from others. Although sometimes I stick with my own idea if I have 100% confidence to it, I still love to hear opinions from other perspective. I believe that by hearing lots of different ideas, our team can broaden thoughts, and it is good for team to be one step near to accomplish the goal.
Area for Development:
* Inspire a Shared Vision:
Sometimes it is hard for me to talk with others about sharing a vision of group working. Usually in a team, I put too much focus on narrowed things such as details and data that we collected. So, I cannot create ideal image of what the team will become with envisioning the future.
* Challenge the Process:
I am a person that fear of changing the status quo. Most of the time, I have no courage to make a step forward to challenge my skills or abilities. However, when we made a mistake, I did think what is the reason so that we can prevent from making the same mistake.
Action Plans:
(1) Challenge the Process
Currently, I am lack of challenging team’s direction. Almost every time when we do the team discussing, I always listen to others’ opinions first, and then nod to them. Also, not only in the class, I am fear of changing what I was used to do. For example, when I go to the restaurant, every time I order what I always eat which I know it tastes delicious; I have no courage to order other dishes that I cannot imagine how it will taste like. So, I want to be more courageous and push others, including myself, to try new things.
My goals to make improvement:
• During the team discussion, I should ask critical questions to others, not only agree with them.
• Every time I should review team processes so that we can keep the team on track.
• If we are up against the wall, I should encourage team to learn from mistakes and to have courage to try new things.
• I should try to challenge the new thing that I haven’t done so. For instance, I should order other dishes that are totally new to me.
(2)Relationship Management
Since English is not my first language, I often feel there is a wall between others and me. Also, usually it is difficult to gather all team member together to have a meeting because everyone has busy schedule. My behavior for this situation now is: say my opinion only when I was asked, and wait for others contact to me. So, from now, I want to become more initiative people with good team relationship.
My goals to make improvement:
•Communicate more with team members. To be specific, share my idea voluntarily whenever I came up with new thought.
• To be more communicative person, I will attend “Coffee Hour” every week, which is held by ISA every Friday, to have more chance to talk with other people
• Take the initiative to make all members cohesive. More specifically, contact others whenever I thought there is need to have meeting or something.
• Build positive relationship with compassion. Make everyone highly involve in the team.
Through this course, I will do my best to accomplish my goals. To realize my goals, I should check my situation step by step every week. After reviewing progress, I believe I will be able to make improvement from the next other week.
Very nice job on the LDP. I like your specific action plans. Now, your job is to actually take these actions! So many times I see students, often international students, make these very nice plans and then not follow them. My experience is that they usually regret the missed opportunity to take a step forward. My advice – feel the fear you have and then do it anyway!
