Understanding of Effective Leadership Models

I think I have a good knowledge about effective leadership in organizations by understanding Kouzes and Posner’s Five Practices of Leadership and Emotional Intelligence. A good leader in organizations should set up goals for the organization which are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. Then, the leader should demonstrate his/her leadership to encourage and motivate teammates to work on their tasks for accomplishing these goals. An effective leadership can bring positive atmosphere to the team so that it will help the team move forward.

According to Kouzes and Posner, there are 5 practices of leadership model. Following is a short description of each practice:

  1. Model the Way:
    – A leader establishes standards or goals for other people to follow.
  2. Inspire a shared Vision:
    – A leader envisions the team’s future, creating an image of what the organization will become.
  3. Challenge the Process:
    – A leader changes the status quo of the organization.
  4. Enable others to Act:
    – A leader fosters cohesive teams and encourage others to be involved in the team.
  5. Encourage the Heart:
    – A leader recognizes contributions that individuals make, and share in the rewards of their efforts.

For the Emotional Intelligence, there are four components as following:

  1. Self-Awareness:
    – An ability to know one’s emotions, strengths, weakness, and recognize their impact on others.
    – A leader should guide decisions by trusting “gut feelings”.
  2. Self-Management:
    – An ability to control disruptive or harmful emotions.- A leader should know how to balance his/her emotion.
  3. Social Awareness:
    – An ability to understand others.
    – A leader should have skill to practice empathy, sharing and understanding others’ perspective.
  4. Relationship Management:
    – An ability to connect with others and build positive relationships.
    – A leader should be able to treat others with compassion, sensitivity, and kindness.
