Artifact 4 -Google Remix
Unit Objectives:
- Learn about the history of computer graphics
- Examine the role of technology as in cultural maintenance and change
- Discuss the validity of art created with the aid of computers
Artifact: Google Remix
Initially I thought this exercise was going to be very simple, but after sitting and thinking for a while, I found it was more difficult than expected to come up with the 10 words. When I finally began to feel inspired, it suddenly became far easier and turned from a task into something that was fun and exciting. It made me think about how Ellen Dissanayake focused on the importance of art and how, “There is no known society that does not practice at least one of what in the West we call ‘the arts’” (Dissanayake 21). I was simply fulfilling the biological necessity of the species to create art. Although my art was created using a remix of the art of others, the end result is still something entirely new and unique. This was actually a lot of fun when I stopped thinking of it as an assignment and began to view it as an opportunity to create my own art.

Reflection:
This was a fascinating subject because, although I had seen some artwork that was created with the aid of computers, I always felt they belonged in a lesser category than the traditional types of fine art and that less skill was involved. When I began to create my own work of art with the assistance of a computer, I was amazed at the level of difficulty involved in creating something very unique that could be considered art, and that was just using art created by others and remixing it. This exercise gave me a much greater respect for this art form.
Future:
Going forward, I have a much greater respect for computerized artwork and graphic design as a real art form. Going into this, I did not see this as artwork that belonged in the same category as fine arts such as painting and sculpture but now I realize that, although they are all different, they are equal in value. Attempting this project showed me how difficult creating artwork was, even using someone else’s work and remixing it.
