Objectives:

  • Examine methods for evaluating qualities of art, such as product versus process, the difference between craft and fine art, must art be archival, and what is an aesthetic reaction.
  • Explore the notion of food as an artform.
  • Consider cultural differences in the production and consumption food.

Response:

This was probably the most entertaining post for me so far. I spent the time to film myself making a pizza and while that was playing I played an interview I did with a few of my friends about how food is or is not art. They actually had some really insightful comments on how the food itself may not be art, but it may become art if the creator intends to make it beautiful and for viewing. I don’t know if I exactly agree with that stand point but it was interesting nonetheless.

When I look back at the previous week and look at what art is and how it is a part of our human characteristics it makes me understand the idea of food as art even more. Growing up with my mom having a large culinary background I always just assumed that food was art based on my own preconceptions. After this I really reaffirmed my belief with the knowledge of Food as Art by Telfer combined with What is Art For by Dissanayake.

Future:

In the future I plan to keep this view constant with the new backing that I have found. Art is a part of who we are and it is a way that we express ourselves through a medium. Food is a medium that allows us to both get nourished and also express our emotions and feelings through beauty and style. Food itself may not always be art inherently but the preparation and expression used in making food create a form of artwork.
