As someone that was excited to hear about the games that supposedly led to meaningful change, I was also disappointed by McGonigal’s games. As far as I can tell from the game’s website, “World Without Oil” is just an app that gives you a map of local gas stations along with pretend prices. Playing along required people to dramatically change their daily lives, something McGonigal specifically stated that people are unwilling to do. Although I do believe her overall argument that gamers have the potential to act as agents of social change, her games do not provide a smooth transition for gamers, nor do they justify a seven-fold increase in the amount spent playing online video games.

I like the point that you make here about McGonigal’s approach to the issue that people who play video games can actually ‘save the world.’ I too find it odd that although she said that she created video games, they appear to be more so like online simulations instead of games such as World of Warcraft, an RPG that has a longer story, more objectives, and things like that. However, maybe perhaps her ‘games’ are so realistic that it makes it difficult to view them as video games. If you think back, how many popular video games were based on real life. Looking back on the games that I had growing up, the only game that comes to mind is SIMS. Every other popular game that was released within the last 19 years was based off of fiction and fantasy from first-person shooter games like Halo, to fighting games like Dead or Alive, and racing games like Burnout and Need for Speed. Not being able to try out McGonigal’s game myself, I believe that I could just have a bias perspective about what defines a video game and whether or not her ‘games’ are actually video games that have the ability to convert gamers into heroes.
