My father resembles me in physical appearance, which is cool since if he didn’t, it would be a pretty awkward conversation at this point. He’s an imposing figure standing about 6’4” and as of the past couple of years is in good shape. His head is larger than my brother and I, with a strong jaw and graying eyes. He has broad shoulders and could probably really mess someone’s day up if he wanted to. He has gained most of his athletic build from his interest into mountain biking and swimming. His graying hair is slightly receding in the back of his head, but he covers it up with a hat often. From time to time he tends to grow out his professional stubble into a beard, but is more often than not clean-shaven.
Although he spent half of his life in Los Angeles he doesn’t have the best fashion sense and is most comfortable in jeans and a t-shirt. At work he wears either a blue, black or gray suit with black shoes and simple black socks. He resists getting permanent glasses although his eyesight isn’t what it was, and is only comfortable wearing them when he’s at the computer or reading. He’s a very personable guy, who can make a conversation with just about anyone. This was sometimes a problem growing up, especially when I was trying to leave some place and I would have to wait until his dragged out conversation was over. He is able to make most people laugh, unless you get offended easily, since most subjects can cross the line. He has lived an interesting life and has moved around quite a bit. He was born in Eugene and went to high school in Newport. After high school he went and joined The United States Navy. After being in Desert Storm and gaining a couple war stories… which were only half truths until I was able enough to understand the actions of a sailor.
Once he was out of the Navy, He met my mother with some luck and charm he was able to marry her. He worked at the Los Angeles Police Department for 17 years and continued his career as a direct consultant to the training group of shooter tactics for four years. He has continued his career back to the Oregon coast and currently is part of a private law firm. While many differences remain between the two of us we can understand and comprehend the decisions we have made. Our paths have both been started within the Eugene area, but will lead us to different lifestyles beyond the Willamette Valley.
